WARNING: "porn"

I don't find this erotic in the slightest and I find it disgusting in terms of animal cruelty and the like, but I do still find something (is it humor? is it a sad insight into my fellow humans?) worthwhile in it.

BEWARE, NOT FOR WORK, IT REALLY IS "PORN." (the quotes aren't because it doesn't actually show sex.)

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1879703/

I don't know what to say. I'm certainly not a fan of targeting "certain establishments" (and I suppose that's a nice way of saying demographics), but I mean, with Apple Chill, Avalon and now this (where all those involved are from Durham or Raleigh); it just doesn't seem like these type of places really "fit" in Chapel Hill, and if there's really that much demand for these types of clubs, then let people go from Chapel Hill to Raleigh and Durham to find them.

230 Miles per gallon

http://www.newsnshit.com/2005/10/hybrid-car-hackers-get-230-mpg.html

Nine questions for people who know everything

answers in the comments section

These are not trick questions. They are straight questions with straight answers.
1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?

4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?

5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?

6. Only three words in Standard English begin with the letters "dw"

and they are all common words. Name two of them.

7. There are 14 Punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter "S".

Gilbert Arena's does not believe in shark attacks

Excerpt from his blog (http://www.nba.com/blog/gilbert_arenas.html). I cannot believe this is real.

There Are No Such Thing as Shark Attacks
I know this is random, but I just want to clear this up for people out there.

There are these things called shark attacks, but there is no such thing as a shark attack. I have never seen a real shark attack.

I know you’re making a weird face as you’re reading this. OK people, a shark attack is not what we see on TV and what people portray it as.

We’re humans. We live on land.

Sharks live in water.

So if you’re swimming in the water and a shark bites you, that’s called trespassing. That is called trespassing. That is not a shark attack.

A shark attack is if you’re chilling at home, sitting on your couch, and a shark comes in and bites you; now that’s a shark attack. Now, if you’re chilling in the water, that is called invasion of space. So I have never heard of a shark attack.

When I see on the news where it’s like, “There have been 10 shark attacks,” I’m like, “Hey, for real?! They’re just running around? Sharks are walking now, huh! We live on the land, we don’t live underwater.”

In the laptop market

I'd love to get anyone and everyone's thoughts on anything regarding the current (and recent) laptop market -- good experiences, bad experiences, what you'd look for, what you'd stay away from. I love my MacBookPro right now, but for some of the testing software in law school, they recommend Windows (fuckers). Anyways, this is where I'm leaning right now:

http://premierecomm.dell.com/dellstore/basket.aspx?itemtype=CFG&s=eep&l=en&cs=rc985663&c=us&&details=true

thoughts?

especially on customization stuff (I hear Vista is a memory hog) -- should I go higher than 2 gigs of RAM?

also, how do you know if the processor is Santa Rosa (centrino) or just the regular old Core 2 Duo?

I'm definitely coming in cheaper than I thought I'd be, so if something makes sense to do, I'm not against paying for it.

HeroRats

http://herorat.org/

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200501/s1282859.htm

From JP Morgan Investment Banker

Dear Co-Workers and Managers,

As many of you probably know, today is my last day. But before I leave, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know what a great and distinct pleasure it has been to type "Today is my last day."

For nearly as long as I've worked here, I've hoped that I might one day leave this company. And now that this dream has become a reality, please know that I could not have reached this goal without your unending lack of support. Words cannot express my gratitude for the words of gratitude you did not express.

I would especially like to thank all of my managers both past and present but with the exception of the wonderful Saroj Hariprashad: in an age where miscommunication is all too common, you consistently impressed and inspired me with the sheer magnitude of your misinformation, ignorance and intolerance for true talent. It takes a strong man to admit his mistake - it takes a stronger man to attribute his mistake to me.

Over the past seven years, you have taught me more than I could ever ask for and, in most cases, ever did ask for. I have been fortunate enough to work with some absolutely interchangeable supervisors on a wide variety of seemingly identical projects - an invaluable lesson in overcoming daily tedium in overcoming daily tedium in overcoming daily tedium.

Your demands were high and your patience short, but I take great solace knowing that my work was, as stated on my annual review, "meets expectation." That is the type of praise that sends a man home happy after a 10 hour day, smiling his way through half a bottle of meets expectation scotch with a meets expectation cigar. Thanks Trish!

And to most of my peers: even though we barely acknowledged each other within these office walls, I hope that in the future, should we pass on the street, you will regard me the same way as I regard you: sans eye contact.

But to those few souls with whom I've actually interacted, here are my personalized notes of farewell:

To Philip Cress, I will not miss hearing you cry over absolutely nothing while laying blame on me and my coworkers. Your racial comments about Joe Cobbinah were truly offensive and I hope that one day you might gain the strength to apologize to him.

To Brenda Ashby whom is long gone, I hope you find a manager that treats you as poorly as you have treated us. I worked harder for you then any manager in my career and I regret every ounce of it. Watching you take credit for my work was truly demoralizing.

To Sylvia Keenan, you should learn how to keep your mouth shut sweet heart. Bad mouthing the innocent is a negative thing, especially when your talking about someone who knows your disgusting secrets. ; )

To Bob Malvin (Mr. Cronyism Jr), well, I wish you had more of a back bone. You threw me to the wolves with that witch Brenda and I learned all too much from it. I still can't believe that after following your instructions, I ended up getting written up, wow. Thanks for the experience buddy, lesson learned.

Don Merritt (Mr. Cronyism Sr), I'm happy that you were let go in the same manner that you have handed down to my dedicated coworkers. Hearing you on the phone last year brag about how great bonuses were going to be for you fellas in upper management because all of the lay offs made me nearly vomit. I never expected to see management benefit financially from the suffering of scores of people but then again, with this company's rooted history in the slave trade it only makes sense.

To all of the executives of this company, Jamie Dimon and such. Despite working through countless managers that practiced unethical behavior, racism, sexism, jealousy and cronyism, I have benefited tremendously by working here and I truly thank you for that. There was once a time where hard work was rewarded and acknowledged, it's a pity that all of our positive output now falls on deaf ears and passes blind eyes. My advice for you is to place yourself closer to the pulse of this company and enjoy the effort and dedication of us "faceless little people" more. There are many great people that are being over worked and mistreated but yet are still loyal not to those who abuse them but to the greater mission of providing excellent customer support. Find them and embrace them as they will help battle the cancerous plague that is ravishing the moral of this company.

So, in parting, if I could pass on any word of advice to the lower salary recipient ("because it's good for the company") in
India or Tampa who will soon be filling my position, it would be to cherish this experience because a job opportunity like this comes along only once in a lifetime.

Meaning: if I had to work here again in this lifetime, I would sooner kill myself.

To those who I have held a great relationship with, I will miss being your co-worker and will cherish our history together. Please don't bother responding as at this very moment I am most likely in my car doing 85 with the windows down listening to Biggie.

One!

Last Song at Santa Clara
Former Santa Clara play-by-play man Dave Lewis had a point to make -- and he used Beyonce to make it.
Cliff Watts/SIOkay, so you're the longtime broadcaster of a mid-major college basketball team. You're upset that the school has just forced out its longtime basketball coach so it could hire somebody younger. What's your next move? Well, if you're Santa Clara play-by-play man Dave Lewis you show up at a team banquet and sing a bunch of songs that indirectly criticize how the team handled its coaching situation. In the end it costs you your job.Last week, in front of 125 Santa Clara fans and employees, Lewis sang a version of the Beyonce song Irreplaceable that included the line "You've been fired, tell the press you’re retired." Lewis then sang a song about a school that tried to hire Rick Majerus, but ending up hiring an assistant coach. Both songs clearly referenced longtime Santa Clara coach Dick Davey's forced resignation this past season.Lewis, who had been Santa Clara's play-by-play man for the last 12 years, will now have to find a new job. In what seems like his last hoorah, Lewis told the press "If I'm fired for telling the truth in song, I can certainly maintain my integrity and live with the consequences." He certainly maintained his integrity, but now he will have to live with the consequences. Still, you have to have the utmost respect for Lewis. In an era when people will do whatever it takes to keep their jobs, Lewis did what he felt he needed to do, and it ended up costing him his job.By Eric Horowirz

Facebook Article

Who is Sick?

http://whoissick.org/sickness/

Our Story

The genesis of the idea for Who Is Sick was actually from an acute need that our founder had when his wife started experiencing severe stomach pain while they were on vacation. With no way of knowing whether the pain was from appendicitis, food poisoning, or some other stomach illness, our vacationing couple went to the emergency room and waited for 4 hours (BTW - this was from 11pm until 3am) to be seen by a doctor...only to be told that there was a stomach flu going around and that if the pain didn't go away in 24 hours, to come back. Wow. 4 hours wait for that...in the middle of the night... (of course the doctor did check to see if it was appendicitis so they weren't all bad...).
Our founder thought, "if only there were a website that had current AND local sickness information, maybe we could have avoided the long wait." Needless to say, this started the wheels spinning and a couple of months later, Who Is Sick was born.
Our inspiration for the design of the site came from Craigslist and HousingMaps. One - a remarkably simple and intuitive user generated content site that has bucked the trend of "slick and cool" for simple and easy. The other - the first truly groundbreaking mashup that also put simplicity over full-featured functionality and complexity. We've done our best to provide the same type of experience.

Amazing article about duck sex and evolution
Here's a link to longest duck penis ever seen

A city of 2 million with no addresses or street names. link

This may be the most depressing article ever. I've decided I want to die young or cure aging. It's also kind of long, so you probably shouldn't read it. The author is one of my favorites; here a short piece about him.

Here's religious question for Manish:
You are a product tester and frequently bring your work home. Yesterday, while dressed in a flame resistant suit (up to 3,000 degrees) and carrying the latest model fire extinguisher, you discover your neighbor's house is on fire. As the flames quickly spread, you stand and watch your neighbor's new baby burn to death. Which of the following best describes your behavior?
A) All-powerful
B) All-knowing
C) All-loving
D) Mysterious

anti-religion and how speakers work

Last night I saw Jon Stewart interview Christopher Hitchens who just wrote the book God Is Not Great.

So I decided to look up some reviews of this book and found some excerpts here.
Hitchens is absolutely ruthless, I thought it was a great read.
(On a side note the site http://slate.com/that it is hosted on is pretty cool, check it out)

Then in searching for more stuff by this guy, I found a lecture (2 mp3s that you can download) he did with Richard Dawkins and another guy about why we would be better off without religion.
(The site it is hosted on is Richard Dawkin's main website http://richarddawkins.net/home which has a ton of really interesting links)

After listening to this, it made me wonder how speakers work (I had heard enough about religion). Answer.

Sorry, its been a slow night for me in Princeton. Oh by the way, Princeton's campus is beautiful. I would describe it as a UNC-Duke hybrid.

Also a nice Snoop Dogg quote explaining how he's different from Imus

"It's a completely different scenario. [Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We're talking about hos that's in the 'hood that ain't doing shit, that's trying to get a nigga for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain't no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them muthafuckas say we in the same league as him."

I will be in Chapel Hill this on Monday night, so maybe we can all watch this together.

There will never be another Grizzly Man.

Human Giant

There is a show on MTV called Human Giant, it is really funny. Human Giant is actually a group of 3 guys that have been working together for a while.

One of the 3 cast members is this guy Aziz Ansari, who I have been following on the stand-up comedy/improv scene for a few years. I feel bad that he sold out to MTV, especially because he was doing improv and standup at some really cool bars in NYC.

Even though he did sell out to MTV, the comedy is still great.

Due to the fact that my job requires many hours of mindless pipetting I've started downloading podcast (which I think work for poeple without ipods). I've really gotten into TED talks http://ted.com/tedtalks/, but there's a ton of stuff out there (all of it free). I haven't tried this out yet, but UC Berkeley does podcast for their courses http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978417. I think this could be a really neat way to learn.

Also, I've been playing around with Google Reader. It's pretty damn cool. Everyone should check it out.

Chances are I've extolled the virtues of this movie to you all before, but I have recently been re-enlightened as to its genius. Having now said that, I'm confident none of you will watch it and those that do will hate it. But hell, you guys like Southpark, so give it a chance.

Rock

The Gossip - Standing in the Way of Control

I really like this group. The lead singer is this girl who actually makes you feel it when she sings. She just lets loose and sings like the singers from the Motown era, except now it is rock. Really really really good, I very highly recommend them.

Teddybears

"They began as Skull, a grindcore group"
Swedish rock band in 1991

What is not to like...

Since then they have started experimenting more with electronica. As a result I really like their new sound. I confess that I have always had a place in my heart for shameless pop, and since they are not mainstream I do not mind blasting them with the windows down. I would categorize their music as electropop/dreampop. If you like The Dandy Warhols (The Monkey House - top 5 albums ever) or The Flaming Lips, you might like these guys. It is a really good mix of rock, pop, some reggae, and electronica.

Their latest album is Soft Machine, and I highly recommend you buy it and listen to it all the way through...all their songs are good but their songs Punkrocker (ft. Iggy Pop), Are You Feelin' It (ft. Elephant Man), and Cobrastyle (ft. Mad Cobra) are really good.

Other electronica-ish groups you might want to give a try:
Hot Chip - The Warning
Girl Talk - Unstoppable (this group is crazy, they take top 20 songs and mix them all together into this frenzied mix that sounds like 3 records are skipping, or like you are turning the dial on your radio really fast. I am not sure how much I like them, but I just assume I don't understand good music and it is the modern version of Free Jazz)

Grownup Table

A Conversation at the Grownup Table, as Imagined at the Kids’ Table

MOM: Pass the wine, please. I want to become crazy.
DAD: O.K.
GRANDMOTHER: Did you see the politics? It made me angry.
DAD: Me, too. When it was over, I had sex.
UNCLE: I’m having sex right now.
DAD: We all are.
MOM: Let’s talk about which kid I like the best.
DAD: (laughing) You know, but you won’t tell.
MOM: If they ask me again, I might tell.
FRIEND FROM WORK: Hey, guess what! My voice is pretty loud!
DAD: (laughing) There are actual monsters in the world, but when my kids ask I pretend like there aren’t.
MOM: I’m angry! I’m angry all of a sudden!
DAD: I’m angry, too! We’re angry at each other!
MOM: Now everything is fine.
DAD: We just saw the PG-13 movie. It was so good.
MOM: There was a big sex.
FRIEND FROM WORK: I am the loudest! I am the loudest!
(Everybody laughs.)
MOM: I had a lot of wine, and now I’m crazy!
GRANDFATHER: Hey, do you guys know what God looks like?
ALL: Yes.
GRANDFATHER: Don’t tell the kids.

Huntington's Disease

Hey all, Zach just invited me to join, so this is my first post, so howdy.

I saw a really interesting article in NY Times today about Huntington's Disease, and an at risk woman our age who decided to be tested and found that she in fact was positive and probably will start to show symptoms in about ten years. Its pretty interesting and I wonder if I were in a similar position if I would want the test. Here it is.

Huntington's is the disease that killed Woody Guthrie (famous singer who wrote "This Land is Your Land"). Due to the symptoms, he was unable to sing, record or play guitar after a certain point. However, he continued to write songs until right before his death, and in the mid 90s Billy Bragg and Wilco joined forces with his daughter to record some of the songs. The two albums (Mermaid Avenue, Vols I and II) have some really great tunes on them, and are definitely worth checking out. One of my favorites is one that Wilco still plays in concert called "California Stars"

There was a documentary made about the recording process called "Man In The Sand" that is also excellent. Notice that Woody's guitar says "This machine kills fascists", which is awesome.

Enron, terror, and the perils of having too much information
http://www.gladwell.com/2007/2007_01_08_a_secrets.html

The author of Manish's book is one of my favorite authors for the newyorker. Here's his website:http://www.gladwell.com/index.html. He's really good, but sometimes clever to a fault. He wrote the GM article I posted below.

The Tipping Point

The Prince is pretty dense, so right now I am alternating between that and The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell.

"The Tipping Point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire."

This is definitely one of the most interesting books that I have read. He uses straightforward and understandable logic as his primary tool to explain how almost every situation/incident/movement/whatever, no matter what it is, has a Tipping Point.

Must read.

If you like this type of book, I would also recommend:
1. Sync: How Order Emerges from Chaos in the Universe, Nature, and Daily Life
2. Freakanomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
3. The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory (If I remember correctly, the theory of Superstrings has since been disproved...but when I think about this book I think about that crazy shark wrestling kid from College of Charleston . Dan and Crowe please tell me you remember that guy.)

The best from the "aftermath"

As if you haven't already read them -- this is more just a test/example post.

(also, why the fuck has NOBODY mentioned that the exact same thing -- in fact I would argue dirtier, albeit not more violent -- happened hmmmm.....LAST YEAR?)

keep in mind that this happened essentially in mop-up time.....anyways...to the reads:

Forde
Duke Image Suffers Black Eye

Then, rather shamefully, Krzyzewski fired a subtle but unmistakable shot right back at Roy Williams. After saying all the right things, he had to say one catty thing.

(There was only so much falling upon the sword Coach K could tolerate, right there in the Dean Dome after getting his head handed to him. Taking the high road is always easier when you're beating Carolina on a regular basis, which Duke isn't doing anymore.)

"The game was over before that," he said. "I mean the outcome of the game, let's put it that way. That's unfortunate, too, that those people were in the game in that play. Maybe this wouldn't have happened."

So there. Hansbrough had it coming for playing mop-up minutes in a double-digit win.

For the record, Krzyzewski later said, "We should have probably both had our walk-ons in."

Also for the record, Krzyzewski was calling timeout with 50 seconds left and his team down by 13. So he clearly didn't think it was walk-on time at that point.

And Doyel
(in response to this lovely exchange)
How many games did you suspend Christian Laettner for when he stomped on the Kentucky player? (Gregg Doyel, CBS Sportsline)

K: First of all, would you call that a stomp?

Absolutely, I’ve seen it over and over.

K: Well then my judgment and yours differ.

I’ve got some glasses. Are you serious?

K: I’m not going to get into it with you, because you would always want something controversial.

I would just like the truth sometimes, that is all.

K: No, believe me. There’s nobody that likes the truth more than me. After the season we’ll talk about 1992. I would rather talk about 2007 right now.

MUSIC
The Feeling - 12 Stops and Home
(http://www.myspace.com/thefeeling)

This group is probably all over MTV (which I barely watch anymore). But if you have not heard of them, you can thank me later. I would describe them as a "James Blunt-ish" Brit Pop band. The same slow rock feel but with more instruments. You can listen to a few of their songs on the above myspace link. I like their songs "Sewn" and "Never Be Lonely."

I think some legit music snobs would say they enjoy this before they find out that every middle school and sorority girl probably likes it too.
