Lending to the Poor

I don't know if you have heard about the book Banker to the Poor. The author, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, won the Noble Prize this past year. It is about Micro-Lending and why it is a good idea. It is is on my list of books to read.

Anyway here is a website where we can actually help out:

Random

An optical illusion:
http://web.mit.edu/persci/people/adelson/checkershadow_illusion.html

Also a nice Snoop Dogg quote explaining how he's different from Imus

"It's a completely different scenario. [Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We're talking about hos that's in the 'hood that ain't doing shit, that's trying to get a nigga for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain't no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them muthafuckas say we in the same league as him."

A Man Among Wolves

A poor man's Grizzly Man...still very interesting.

"Maverick researched Shaun Ellis raises abandoned wolf cubs and teaches them by example how to survive in the wild."

Link to website, has videos

Monday April 16th at 9 PM on the National Geographic Channel.

I will be in Chapel Hill this on Monday night, so maybe we can all watch this together.

There will never be another Grizzly Man.

Human Giant

There is a show on MTV called Human Giant, it is really funny. Human Giant is actually a group of 3 guys that have been working together for a while.

One of the 3 cast members is this guy Aziz Ansari, who I have been following on the stand-up comedy/improv scene for a few years. I feel bad that he sold out to MTV, especially because he was doing improv and standup at some really cool bars in NYC.

Even though he did sell out to MTV, the comedy is still great.

I found a few youtubes, hilarious:

Web 2.0

Google Earth adds conflict info: http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/04/10/google.genocide/index.html
They show mountain top removal as well.

Due to the fact that my job requires many hours of mindless pipetting I've started downloading podcast (which I think work for poeple without ipods). I've really gotten into TED talks http://ted.com/tedtalks/, but there's a ton of stuff out there (all of it free). I haven't tried this out yet, but UC Berkeley does podcast for their courses http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978417. I think this could be a really neat way to learn.

Also, I've been playing around with Google Reader. It's pretty damn cool. Everyone should check it out.

Cannibal! The Musical

Chances are I've extolled the virtues of this movie to you all before, but I have recently been re-enlightened as to its genius. Having now said that, I'm confident none of you will watch it and those that do will hate it. But hell, you guys like Southpark, so give it a chance.

Are humans hard-wired for faith?

http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/04/04/neurotheology/index.html

Zach and I had a class on the philosophy of religion in which we discussed the possibility of humans being hard-wired to believe in a higher power. If you find this article interesting you should really google the topic because it really is fascinating.

Here's an article along those same lines, but goes into greater detail. -Zach
